Short history of the Group
The Group was formed in 1958 in the Irish National Association’s Cultural Centre in Sydney.
It was started by Peter McKenna who came to Australia from Ardee, County Louth in Ireland. He remained leader until his untimely death on 6th February 1992.
The current leaders Margaret and Bill Winnett have danced with the Group for many years and during that time have made many visits to Ireland to learn the dances and bring them back to Australia.
Margaret and Bill conduct workshops in various cities and the Group performs at festivals around New South Wales and Canberra each year. The Group also performs at corporate events, community events, weddings, and various other venues throughout the year.
A wide variety of set dances are taught and performed together with ceili and step dances.
We believe that the Group is the longest continuing Irish dance Group in Australia and in its 50th year it retains as its prime objective the teaching, dancing and promotion of the traditional dances of Ireland.
